Please see below the latest updates on the AAMA activities for the past three weeks:
I recently heard from Ani Aprahamian from the Physics Institute in Armenia that most of the machinery for the oxygen generation project has been delivered from Russia. There remains the compressor (on its way) to complete the $650,000+ project. The AAMA funded about 1/3 of the cost. Once operational, Armenia will have more than enough capacity to generate oxygen for the entire country.
We recently had an advanced meeting with the US and Armenian HBO experts to put the final touches on the infrastructure needs to make the 2 HBO machines (one for Mikaelyan hospital in Armenia and the other for the Republican hospital in Artsakh) operational. I am hopeful the HBO program will be finally established before year’s end.
The AAMA has identified an US trained primary care physician with many years of experience in mission work (including in Armenia) who is interested in traveling to Artsakh and offering primary health care (and possibly training the locals) in the towns and villages of Artsakh. We are engaged in meetings with Tufenkian foundation representatives in Armenia and Carolann Najarian with the goal of providing assistance to the limited availability of health care in Artsakh and its many villages. The Artsakh MOH is very receptive and eager to start the program and we are working on developing the job description.
The AAMA is exploring potential collaborations with COAF which has a significant presence in different Marzes in rural Armenia. Two areas of common interest include: (a) possibilities of sending US med students and residents to the COAF-run health clinics and medical centers for 3-4 weeks elective rotations; (b) AAMA and other diaspora specialty and subspecialty support for the COAF primary care providers by telehealth.
Our fall membership drive / happy hour that took place on Friday September 10 at Waltham Craft Food Hall was a big hit. We had about 45 AAMA members and friends, including a large contingent from our Armenian pharmacy colleagues attend. There was plenty of food, networking, and meeting new and old friends.
The deadline for the AAMA scholarship applications is around the corner (10/31/2021). All medical students and allied health students are encouraged to apply. Please visit our website for more details: https://aamaboston.org/scholarship/
We are very close to making a decision for placement of the second C-arm donated by the AAMA. We are deliberating between one of two hospitals in Yerevan and will hopefully have a final decision soon.
We received confirmation from Gyumri medical center that one of the AAMA donated anesthesia machines has been received and is already being used for surgeries.
The Association of Healthcare and Assistance to Older People (AHAOP), an Armenian NGO focusing on geriatric care is holding a symposium in Armenia next week on geriatric care, and our own Armen Arslanian, past AAMA president, will be a key symposium speaker.
Please visit our website at www.aamaboston.org and enjoy all the upgrades and new features that we have incorporated. For new or current members, we ask that you pay your dues through the website electronically ($150 for licensed practitioners, $75 for residents and fellows, free for all students). This will give you access to other clinicians, volunteer opportunities, discounts on events, and other. Remember that the AAMA is a non-profit organization. All your donations, including payment of your dues, are tax-deductible. Most of your paid dues go to fund medical student and allied health student scholarships. We are also on FB, Instagram, and Twitter.
Another important reminder that we (the AAMA) are registered with the Amazon Smile program. Every time you purchase an item from Amazon, provided you choose AAMA as your non-profit from the Amazon Smile website, a certain percentage of your purchase gets donated to AAMA. We now have over 218 members / friends on this mailing list. The dollars add up. Please remember to make use of this program while shopping on Amazon.
The 1st Dr. Raffy Hovanessian International Digestive Disease Virtual Conference took place on September 11-12. This conference was made possible by the International Center for Professional Development (ICPD). AAMA is one of the ICPD donors. Our own AAMA board member, Raffi Karagozian, was one of the conference speakers / organizers.
If any of you are interested in being more actively involved with any of the AAMA activities above, or should you have an idea / project you would like to undertake or a donation to make, please reach out to me and we will get you more involved and support you as best we can.

Come and join us at the AAMA social gathering and membership drive to take place this coming Friday September 10 at Waltham Craft Food Hall from 6-9pm. Please see attached flyer for more details. RSVP by 9/7/2021. The cost is $30 per person and will include passed food and soft drinks. All AAMA members, friends, and significant others are invited. People interested in becoming AAMA members are also very welcome. The event will be mostly a social get-together with some brief highlights of the AAMA current and future plans to be presented by the board.
The AAMA is exploring potential collaborations with Children of Armenia Fund (COAF) which has a significant presence in different Marzes in rural Armenia. Two areas of common interest include: (a) possibilities of sending US med students and residents to the COAF-run health clinics and medical centers for 3-4 weeks elective rotations; (b) AAMA specialty and subspecialty support for the COAF primary care providers by telehealth.
The medical student consortium team will meet next week to deliberate on strategies to collaborate with medical student and postgraduate training and education both in Armenia and New England. We are considering journal club and case presentation zoom webinars for medical students and residents from Armenia to benefit from. We are also exploring opportunities with the various medical schools in Armenia and the NIH.
The AAMA is also engaged in meetings with Tufenkian foundation representatives in Armenia and others including Carolann Najarian and Anush Sahakian with the goal of providing assistance to the limited availability of health care in Artsakh and its many villages. We have identified an Armenian primary care physician from the U.S. who is very interested in leading a long-term mission work to Artsakh. We will be reaching out to the Artsakh MOH to formalize this project soon.
The Aurora grant application with AAMA and the Traveling Doctors (Armine Barkhudarian) has been submitted for review. This is another project worth $40,000 (AAMA portion=10K) for villages in Artsakh that will offer preventive and primary care in women’s health. We are hopeful it will be funded.
Separately, the AAMA board has approved the establishment of 2 AAMA grants (first prize: 10K and second prize: 5K). This will be open to all individuals, organizations, and non-profits doing health care work in Armenia or Artsakh.
Nursing sub-committee: The AAMA currently includes about 12 nurses, nurse practitioners, nursing students and nurse professors. Several nurses have come forward and expressed interest in regrouping to form a subcommittee to explore various nurse-led projects that would benefit both Armenia / Artsakh as well as the New England communities we serve.
The 100 oxygen concentrators (and transformers) that the AAMA facilitated in shipping to Armenia have been received by the Association of Healthcare and Assistance to Older People (AHAOP), an Armenian NGO focusing on geriatric care.
Along the same line, AHAOP is holding a symposium in Armenia end of September on geriatric care, and our own Armen Arslanian, past AAMA president will be a key symposium participant.
Please visit our website at www.aamaboston.org and enjoy all the upgrades and new features that we have incorporated. Please see below the latest updates on the AAMA activities for the past 2 weeks:
The PT/Rehab 2-day symposium in Armenia, partly sponsored by the AAMA, took place this weekend on July 17 and 18.
No new updates on the two HBO machines that have been delivered to their respective hospitals including one to Mikaelyan Institute (Yerevan) and the other to the Republican Hospital (Artsakh). We are organizing meetings between the engineers / technicians in the US and those in Armenia, and with the help of the expertise of the Physics institute to ensure adequate infrastructure is available / established to connect the machines and put them to work.
Anush Sahakian is traveling to Armenia on July 21. She will be taking with her 175 large CPAP masks, 120 bronchoscopy sterile collection traps and other oxygen supplies, particularly needed by COVID patients at the Sourp Grigor Loussavoritch Hospital.
Our Partners for World Health project has moved yet one additional step forward. The doors of the 40Ft container are sealed after being filled with medical supplies and equipment. It will soon be shipped to Armenia, and will deliver the supplies to Sourp Asdvadzamayr Hospital and the Traumatology and Orthopedics Center.
The 100 oxygen concentrators with their transformers that the AAMA shipped have arrived to Armenia and will be handed off to our partners on the ground, the AHAOP, who will distribute them to elderly patients, nursing homes, and patients with respiratory problems in need. We will also fund the purchase of over 100 pulse oximeters to help with the program.
The Oxygen Generator machine being built in Russia, and partially funded by the AAMA, has been delayed due to technical issues. The new expected completion and transfer date to Armenia is towards the end of August.
The medical student consortium team continues its planning meetings as we develop strategies to collaborate with medical student and postgraduate training and education both in Armenia and New England as well as developing a journal club and case presentation zoom webinars for medical students and residents from Armenia to benefit from. To date, we have identified about a dozen medical students (who know what specialty they plan to apply for / train in) and residents of Armenian descent, and we have connected them with same-specialty faculty / physicians from within the AAMA to act as their mentors as they mature into their specialty / subspecialty training (more to come on this).
Along the same lines, we are planning a social meet and great / happy hour on Friday September 10 (time and location to be determined) for all AAMA members, young and seasoned, to meet each other.
Please visit our website at www.aamaboston.org and enjoy all the upgrades and new features that we have incorporated. For new or current members, we ask that you pay your dues through the website electronically ($150 for licensed practitioners, $75 for residents and fellows, free for all students). The AAMA, through the help of our Wisconsin friends has purchased an institutional one-year subscription to DynaMed for the Republican Scientific and Medical Library (RSML) in Armenia. They’ve been sending out FB posts letting people know about its availability and we believe they’re off to a good start. We have also funded four subscriptions for UpToDate purchased at Kanaker-Zeytun Hospital, and Mikaelyan Surgical Institute, and the National Institute of Health.
The AAMA continues to explore the possible funding of a mobile clinic for a few villages in Artsakh in collaboration with the Tufenkian foundation.
If any of you are interested in being more actively involved with any of the AAMA activities above, or should you have an idea / project you would like to undertake, please reach out to me and we will get you more involved and support you as best we can.

Please see below the latest updates on the AAMA activities for the past 2 weeks:
The two HBO machines project (one to Mikaelyan Institute in Yerevan and the other to the Republican Hospital in Artsakh): We held a meeting last week with the engineers / technicians in the US and the engineers and hospital administrators in Armenia, and with the help of the expertise of the Physics institute to ensure adequate oxygen pressure and supply in anticipation of starting the program.
Anush Sahakian is in Armenia. She has taken with her 4 suitcases of urgently needed Covid supplies that will be distributed to 3 hospitals in Armenia. In addition, she will be traveling to Artsakh and take more supplies with her to the Republican Hospital in in Stepanakert.
Partners for World Health project: The 40Ft container filled with medical supplies and equipment will be shipped on August 7 to Armenia to deliver the highly needed items to Sourp Asdvadzamayr Hospital and the Traumatology and Orthopedics Center.
The 100 oxygen concentrators with their transformers that the AAMA shipped have cleared customs and will soon be delivered to our partners on the ground, the AHAOP who will distribute them to elderly patients, nursing homes, and patients with respiratory problems in need. We have also transferred funds to AHAOP to purchase of over 100 pulse oximeters needed for the program.
The Oxygen Generator being built in Russia, and partially funded by the AAMA, will be tested in Russia on August 4. If all testing goes well, the generator will be ready to be transported to Armenia.
Meduni conference in Armenia: Meduni, with whom the AAMA has partnered on the PWH project, is holding a conference and a series of lectures in-person and virtually in Armenia with a focus on digestive and colorectal diseases (please see attachment for more details). We encourage you to attend.
The AAMA has received a request regarding Nephrology specialists who might be interested in helping develop a training program and establish protocols for renal replacement therapies for critically ill patients (e.g. CVVH) in Armenia. Please let me know if you know of someone who may be available to support such a program.
The C-Arm that AAMA shipped to Armenia has cleared customs. Though initially slated to go to the military hospital, we have been informed they no longer need one as they received a donation from elsewhere. We are exploring alternate hospital options in most need of the machine.
The medical student consortium team continues its planning meetings as we develop strategies to collaborate with medical student and postgraduate training and education both in Armenia and New England as well as developing a journal club and case presentation zoom webinars for medical students and residents from Armenia to benefit from. We are exploring opportunities with the various medical schools in Armenia and the NIH.
Along the same lines, we are planning a social meet and great / happy hour on Friday September 10 starting at 6pm (location to be determined) for all AAMA members. Please save the date. Please visit our website at www.aamaboston.org and enjoy all the upgrades and new features that we have incorporated. For new or current members, we ask that you pay your dues through the website electronically ($150 for licensed practitioners, $75 for residents and fellows, free for all students). The Aurora foundation is soliciting grant applications for up to $50,000 in support of projects to be conducted in Artsakh. The AAMA is exploring opportunities to collaborate on a couple of projects with Armenian NGO’s by potentially co-sponsoring such projects. More to come on this.
If any of you are interested in being more actively involved with any of the AAMA activities above, or should you have an idea / project you would like to undertake, please reach out to me and we will get you more involved and support you as best we can.

Please see below the latest updates on the AAMA activities for the past 2 weeks:
The AAMA, under the leadership of Rosalynn and Ara Nazarian, and in collaboration with other diaspora medical organizations, is sponsoring a PT/Rehab 2-day symposium on July 17 and 18 in Armenia. Find the program and poster attached for the upcoming event. We encourage all to sign up and attend.
Our two HBO machines have been delivered to their respective hospitals including one to Mikaelyan Institute (Yerevan) and the other to the Republican Hospital (Artsakh). Please see attached photos. We are now working with Ani Aprahamian from the Physics institute to ensure adequate infrastructure is available / established to connect the machines and put them to work. Michael Varadian is leading this project and we are getting closer and closer to establishing a viable HBO program for our people in Armenia and Artsakh.
Our Partners for World Health project has moved one additional step forward. We have now signed a memorandum of agreement with Meduni, an NGO with a presence in Armenia, who will be responsible to clear the 40Ft container full of medical supplies once shipped to Armenia, and will deliver the supplies on our behalf to Sourp Asdvadzamayr Hospital and the Traumatology and Orthopedics Center.
Anush Sahakian has formed a Facebook group “Armenian Physicians” in the hopes of having a more connected network across the world. Since many of us are either working or planning to work on different projects for Armenia, we are often not aware if others are involved in similar projects. This is a private group restricted to physicians where sensitive clinical and non-clinical topics are discussed in a safe environment. Should you be interested and have a Facebook account, you are invited to join at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1232978670455500
To date, we have received close to 3K donations for our Music and Medicine event. As a reminder, a donation of $100 or more will get you either the Isabelle Bayrakdarian CD or Lisa Wong’s book.
Please visit our website at www.aamaboston.org and enjoy all the upgrades, new features and past events that we have incorporated. For new or current members, we ask that you pay your dues through the website electronically. Remember that the AAMA is a non-profit organization. All your donations, including payment of your dues, are tax-deductible.
We now have over 215 members / friends on this mailing list. The dollars add up. Consider making use of this program while shopping on Amazon.
Although the AAMA will no longer actively participate in shipping and transporting medical supplies to Armenia, we do consider projects (shipments) based on an “as needed” basis or Armenian MOH / hospitals urgent need requests. We have AAMA members and contacts who travel often to Armenia and continue to support transporting essential medical supplies (for example Covid-related supplies and PPE’s).
One of the key strategic areas of interest for the AAMA in the coming years will be to help develop and establish medical education, healthcare and specialty training programs in Armenia. For instance, Sharon Chekijian, through a Fulbright scholarship is working on an emergency medicine program. Another friend and colleague, Samuel Badalian, has also recently received a Fulbright scholarship to help establish a Urogynecology program in Armenia. Other areas of interest include Neurology with Viken Babikian; respiratory therapy with Anush Sahakian; primary care with Armineh Mirzabegian; geriatrics with Armen Arslanian; Endocrine (Diabetes project for Artsakh) with Shant Parseghian and others.
Anush is also very interested in establishing a locum tenens/visiting physician program in Armenia for physicians from the diaspora to come and help. If any one of you have the interest to support this program or the time to volunteer in Armenia, please let me or Anush know.
The medical student consortium team continues its planning meetings as we develop strategies to collaborate with medical student and postgraduate training and education both in Armenia and New England as well as developing a journal club and case presentation zoom webinars for medical students and residents from Armenia to benefit from. We are also teaming up med students / residents / fellows with same-specialty AAMA faculty.
Finally, If any of you are interested in being more actively involved with any of the AAMA activities listed above, or should you have an idea / project you would like to undertake, please reach out to me and I will get you more involved and support you as best as we can.
A Happy 4th of July to you all

Please see below the latest AAMA updates for the past 2 weeks:
Our Music and Medicine event that was live-streamed earlier this month continues to be a very big success. To date, we have had 314 registrants. The event will remain on the AAMA website: www.aamaboston.org for viewing until the 3rd of July. It will then be taken down. We encourage all of you who have not seen it yet to not miss this opportunity. For new registrants, please go to this link: https://www.engagez.net/node/872616. For those who have signed up already, enter your email at https://www.engagez.net/AAMA-Boston
Our two HBO machines are in Armenia and they have been cleared through customs. The MOH will next deliver the machines to Mikaelyan Institute (Yerevan) and the Republican Hospital (Artsakh). More details to come.
Our Partners for World Health project is moving forward slowly but surely. The AAMA will be paying a little over $21,000 to get a 40Ft container full of medical supplies that will be shipped to Armenia and delivered to two different hospitals in need. We have identified a local Armenian NGO to accept our shipment, clear it through customs and then deliver to Sourp Asdvadzamayr Hospital and Traumatology and Orthopedics Center (more on this later).
Please visit our website at www.aamaboston.org and enjoy all the upgrades and new features that we have recently incorporated. For new or current members, we ask that you pay your dues through the website electronically. Remember that the AAMA is a non-profit organization. All your donations, including payment of your dues, are tax-deductible. We are also on FB, Instagram, and Twitter.
Also, note that we are registered in the Amazon Smile program. Every time you purchase an item from Amazon, provided you choose our AAMA organization as your non-profit from the Amazon Smile website, a certain percentage of your purchase gets donated to AAMA. Even though one may think that is little dollars, we have close to 215 of you on this mailing list. The dollars add up. Please consider making use of this program while shopping on Amazon.
The medical student consortium team continues its monthly meetings as we develop strategies to collaborate with medical student and postgraduate training and education both in Armenia and New England as well as developing a journal club and case presentation zoom webinars for medical students and residents from Armenia to benefit from. We are also teaming up med students / residents / fellows in NE with same-specialty AAMA faculty. If you have any questions or comments on this, please reach out to me or Alexa.
We also recently were introduced to a group, primarily based in California but with members all over the US by the name of Rise and Raise. Their goal is to work with Armenian pre-medical students and to support them in their medical school applications, and offer advice and mentorship.
Our treasurer, and board member, Shant Parseghian, has initiated a zoom collaboration with Nancy Barsamian (head of AWWA) to improve the care of diabetes in Artsakh. This will include many aspects of care, including nursing, blood sugar control, supplies, education, and other.
An AAMA friend from New York, Samuel Badalian, has successfully obtained a Fulbright scholarship from the US state department with the goal of establishing a fellowship training program in the field of Urogynecology in Armenia. I have formed a group of 7 international Urogynecologists and we are in the process of developing the curriculum, lectures, training program, etc.
To date, the AAMA has invested $185,000 into the oxygen generation program of the Alikhanyan Physics institute in Armenia. We have been informed that due to Covid, the manufacturing of the oxygen generator in Russia has been delayed. The new anticipated delivery date to Armenia is mid-July.
The monthly report we received from Dynamed shows that more and more Armenian physicians are using the medical reference system that we have funded in Armenia.
We continue to explore ideas of supporting a Tufenkian led project in 5 villages in Artsakh to establish a mobile clinic including staff and medical equipment.
As a reminder, if anyone is interested in being more actively involved with any of the AAMA activities above, or should you have an idea / project you would like to undertake, please reach out to me and we will get you more involved and support you as best we can.
